4-H News – Nancy Lambert – 5-29-19 Livestock Committee Meeting


The Saline County 4-H Livestock Committee will meet on Thursday, June 6 at 8:00 p.m. at the Extension office. All committee members and other interested 4-H members and volunteers are welcome to attend.
We will be finalizing plans for the upcoming 2019 4-H Livestock shows, clean-ups, weigh-outs, and discussing the Livestock Auction. See you there!
Small Pets Forms
Saline County 4-H members planning to show a pet in the 4-H Small Pets Show on July 22 are reminded that forms are due in to the Extension Office by June 15. Members must indicate what type of small pet they will be bringing to the show and in which of the Small Pet project areas they are showing – Small Pets I, II, or III. Thanks in advance for your cooperation.
Horse Showmanship Clinic and Practice Show
The Saline County 4-H Horse & Pony Committee will hold a Showmanship Clinic on Thursday, June 13 at 6:00 p.m. The committee also has a Horse and Pony Practice Show planned for Tuesday, June 25 at 6:00 p.m. Both events will be held at the Saline County Fairgrounds. All interested 4-H Horse exhibitors are encouraged to attend. Participants will receive instruction in showmanship and horsemanship, trail class, gaming classes, and more.
Youth and parents are encouraged to write down their questions and bring them to the show.
The 4-H Horse & Pony Committee will hold a short business meeting prior to the Clinic. All committee members are encouraged to attend.

Entry Deadlines Approaching
The deadline to enter the Illinois State Fair Junior Horse Show is June 1. The deadline to enter the Illinois State Fair Junior Livestock Show is July 1. The show is open to current Illinois 4-H and FFA members. 4-H membership is 8 to 18, thus youth who were 19 and older on September 1, 2018 and too old for 4-H can only enter as FFA alumni. Entry forms MUST be signed by either the county 4-H office where you are a member or by your local FFA instructor who must verify your membership.
Check Out the Masters at State Fair
Each county may send one entry into the Illinois State Fair Master Showmanship Contest. The contest begins at 7:30 PM Friday, Aug. 9. Exhibitors must be at least 14 and no older than 18 (as of 9/1/18). You need to supply your own animals for the contest, but may make arrangements to borrow animals from exhibitors at the fair. Top prize is $500. The contest is sponsored by Illinois Farm Bureau and RFD Radio.
