Attended First Baptist Church, served as Chairman of the Board of the Southeastern Illinois Christian Service Camp during their building program; Chairman of the Board of the New Hope Christian Academy during its organization.

Married Darla Jean Yoder on June 5, 1960. Received Bachelor’s Degree from Drake University in 1961. Received Medical Degree from University of Iowa in 1965. When asked about his favorite memory at the College of Medicine, he said that receiving his diploma and election to Alpha Omega Alpha after a rough four years were welcomed achievements. He and his wife worked full-time at the University Hospital while in Medical School. “ While I was either working at the blood bank, studying, or in class, she was juggling our three children and employment as an operating room nurse.” The internal Medicine Department Chairman wanted him to go on and become a ‘double doc’ in Hematology.
Interned at Cincinnati General Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, from 1965-1966.
Board Certified by the American College of Emergency Physicians in 1985.

Captain in the United States Air Force, 1966-1968, stationed at Langley Air Force Base, VA.

Practiced Medicine at Ferrell Hospital where he served as Emergency Room Director, Chief of Staff, Medical and Lab Director, and ACLS Instructor.
He served as Chairman of Public Affairs for the Illinois State Medial Society from 1973-1975
Chairman of Governmental Affairs from the I.S.M.S. from 1975-1976
Chairman of the Saline-Pope-Hardin County Medical Society in 1981 and 1990
Head of Hospice VNA Plus for twenty years.

He donated start-up money for the Clare Boothe Luce Center for Conservative
Women, an organization that presents the conservative world-view to college
women; served two tours as medical missionary to Mexico; has seventeen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; delivered ten of his grandchildren in his home.

Born in a boxcar to tenant farmers in rural Iowa, educated in a country schoolhouse where a teacher recognized his potential and kept him busy by teaching him to knit a ;he became inspired to become a doctor after a hospitalization from a head injury caused by a car accident.

He told someone that he would rather fish than eat, and read than fish. To sum up the years between 1965 and 2019, he has said :
“the caring doctor cares for his patients.”

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 16, 2019 at 1:00 PM at the Watson FUneral Home in Eldorado. Visitation will be held on Friday, November 15, 2019 from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the funeral home. Burial will military honors will be private.
