Kiwanis Learn About Comfort Dogs

The Harrisburg Kiwanis held their weekly luncheon meeting on Wednesday, March 21, 2018, at Ponderosa. Jeff Dennison’s program was about the Shawnee Correctional Center’s Dog Training Program. Dennison is warden at Shawnee Correctional Center of Vienna. Dogs are provided through a no-kill shelter in Metropolis. The purpose of the program is to provide comfort dogs to veterans through the Red, White and Blue veteran organization. The first class consisted of three dogs with training in obedience, potty training, etc. Each training session is for 90 days with a goal in the future of doing 6 dogs every 90 days. The program is also beneficial to helping inmates learn a profession.
