Tantalizing. Scrumptious. Delectable. Succulent. And even “larruping”. All words you’ll likely hear at the Taste of Southern Illinois, the upcoming event organizers call “Southern Illinois’ Best Food Event of the Year.”
Presented in partnership with The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy, Bulldog Systems, Inc., All In One Real Estate, and Wells Fargo Advisors / Tison Wealth Management, the event benefits the Fowler Bonan Foundation’s “Clothes for SI Kids”.
Tickets are $40 per person and a sell-out is again anticipated.
“Simply put, the Taste is a celebration of southern Illinois’ finest restaurants and beverages,” said Michael Tison, of Harrisburg, who originated the event in 1999. “I think it’s a ‘can’t miss’ evening.”
Tison proudly reeled off this year’s eateries and vendors, each of whom will be featuring signature offerings:
•17th Street Bar and Grill
•Alto Pass Vineyards
•Flame Grill & Bar
•Johnson’s Southern Barbeque
•Koerner Distributor, Inc.
•Marion Red Lobster
•Purple Toad Winery
•Tequila’s Mexican Restaurant
•Wooded Hills Bar & Grill
It’s set for Sunday, April 8 at the Bonan Business Center in Harrisburg, from 5-8 pm. Entertainment will be provided by The Penguins — a musical group lead by Jim Smith — a tradition that continues since inception of the event way back in 1999.
Tickets are available by calling Bethany Shaw at 618-253-2427, Tison at 618-253-4444 or 618-993-3513, or the Foundation office at 618-231-3904. Fowler Bonan Foundation board members Dale Fowler, Bill Bonan II, Andy Sisulak, Heather Tate, Marsha Collins, Callie Ellison, Teri Hammond, Bobbie Fox and Marsha Hayes, or executive director Kerry Camp, can also be contacted for tickets. If any remain, they will be $50 at the door.
Shaw, of Harrisburg, co-chairs the event along with Tison.
“The longevity of the event really does speak to its’ success,” Shaw said. “The dishes served by the participating restaurants are always fantastic, and of course when you come and enjoy, you’re helping a disadvantaged child with new clothes and shoes.”
Fowler Bonan Foundation board chairman Dale Fowler offered praise as well.
“The Taste is a great evening of food and fellowship — all to help kids. A huge thanks is certainly in order to all the great restaurants and vendors, and of course our sponsors, who make the Taste come to life each April in Harrisburg.”
The 2018 Taste is also made possible by support from Ameren Illinois, Aydt and Associates, Beck’s Drugs, Clearwave Communications, First Southern Bank, Harrisburg Medical Center, Jim Hayes Inc., Liberty Utilities, Peoples National Bank, Priority Staffing Group, Rep. Natalie Phelps Finnie, and Shawnee Communications, and is expected to raise well over $10,000 for “Clothes for SI Kids”.
Since formally organized as a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization five years ago, the Fowler Bonan Foundation has provided 2,558 under-privileged southern Illinois children with all new wardrobes, always free of any charge. A total of 24,456 articles of clothing have been given to children from eighteen southern Illinois counties during the period.
The foundation relies solely on donations and fundraisers to finance its operations, and is headquartered in Harrisburg. It receives referrals for services from dozens of area schools, the Egyptian Health Department, Family Counseling Center Inc., the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, churches, CASA, United Way, Mentors for Kids, community leaders, concerned citizens, homeless shelters, and other social service agencies.
